In the Wake of Economic Reform: New Prospects for a Nation Building State?
In this lecture Professor Michael Pusey will ruminate on the results of 20 years of neo-liberalism, which include a disciplined government,
ample revenues, an effective regulative apparatus and–perhaps–the capacity for government to steer the economy towards a brighter future.
Professor Pusey will also discuss the negative impacts of neo-liberalism on our institutions.

Re-visioning Arts and Cultural Policy Current Impasses and Future Directions
Held in conjunction with the University of Canberra and the Australian National University, this event will launch the recently
published monograph written by Jennifer Craik, Professor of Communication and Cultural Studies University of Canberra
In this monograph, Jennifer Craik undertakes a critical and historical analysis of the main imperatives of arts and cultural policy in Australia.
With forensic skill she examines the financial and policy instruments commonly relied upon in this much contested and diverse area of public policy.
Craik uses her analysis of past and current policy responses as a platform for articulating future options. This is a valuable work for
cultural professionals and administrators, art historians and, .indeed, anyone with an abiding interest in the management of the nation's
cultural estate.

Is a Cabinet Necessary?
Prof Patrick Weller AO
In Britain and Canada, both Westminster systems, prime ministers have appeared to dispense with cabinet as
a forum for making policy.
In Australia all the processes are still in place. Is Australia likely to follow
the route of those other countries? Or is there something different here that makes cabinet government
either more viable or even more necessary?
The lecture will explore the workings of the Australian cabinet
and consider the possible futures it may have.
